Our daily lives are digital – but at what cost? Smartphones, streaming, AI, and cloud services generate immense amounts of CO₂ emissions, water, and electricity consumption worldwide. Did you know that digital technologies account for around 7% of Germany’s total CO₂ emissions? Or that the annual global water consumption of the digital world is equivalent to 2.178 trillion 1-liter bottles?
Every click, every stored file, and every sent email leaves a footprint. A single long email can generate up to 17 g of CO₂ equivalents.
At the same time, the digitalisation also offers opportunities: Digital technologies could contribute up to 24% toward achieving Germany’s climate targets by 2030.
We aim to counteract the ever-growing volume of data with the Digital Data Cleanup Initiative.
Our Goal: Deleting unnecessary data and preventing the creation of new, redundant data. This initiative raises awareness of the impact of the digital world on the climate, environment, and health—while also strengthening the sense of community within participating organisations.
But data cleanup doesn’t just benefit the environment: Storage space costs money, and excessive data consumption drives up resource use and expenses. Additionally, digital decluttering enhances data protection, data minimisation, and security—helping us stay mentally clear, which in turn supports mental well-being and efficient work.
