Tuta is the world’s first end-to-end encrypted email service that encrypts the entire mailbox. Launched in 2011, Tuta now has millions of users. With its unique open-source technology, Tuta champions privacy and freedom of expression on the internet, as everyone can now easily encrypt their emails. In addition, Tuta’s affordable business version enables companies and organisations of all sizes to protect their email communications with ease.

Following a joint workshop with the CDR Initiative, Tuta is further expanding its commitment to responsible digitalisation. It became clear that, at Tuta, Corporate Digital Responsibility is not an add-on but an integral part of its core business – going far beyond the purely technical implementation of post-quantum cryptography (PQC). This is evident, for example, in

  • the contribution to European sovereignty, such as through the deliberate choice of servers located in Germany
  • the underlying philosophy of informational self-determination
  • the commitment to climate protection
  • contributions to awareness-raising and education

In consultation with the CDR Initiative, key areas for action and opportunities were also identified:

  • to better contextualise and highlight the societal significance of PQC
  • to broaden the discourse on digital responsibility beyond technical issues (e.g. COâ‚‚, inclusion, public education) and thereby reach new target groups

Digitalisation, but with responsibility: that is the central theme at Tuta. We are developing an encrypted communication solution (email, calendar, cloud storage) that gives everyone the opportunity to manage their own data confidently and independently in the digital world. Unfortunately, this is the exception in today’s digital world, which makes it all the more important. We are delighted that, together with the CDR initiative, we can raise and spread awareness of digital responsibility, so that more and more people attach greater importance to their own data and protect it accordingly.

What’s next?

Together with Tuta, we are continuing to develop the concept of Corporate Digital Responsibility to support users, businesses and society as a whole on the path towards a responsible digital future.

We look forward to introducing further development partners in the future and to continuously sharing new insights from which all stakeholders can benefit through mutual exchange. Because one thing is clear: CDR is not a project, but a shared learning journey.
