The CDR Initiative moves to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV)

4. Apr 2022 - Announcement

As a result of the change in responsibility for consumer protection, the CDR Initiative has also moved from the Federal Ministry of Justice to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV). The initiative is to be further intensified and developed together with its members in the BMUV.

Since it was founded in May 2018 by the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection, the CDR Initiative aims to make responsible behaviour in the digital transformation a matter of course for companies across all sectors. In five CDR fields of action, the initiative promotes the development of solutions to tackle the negative social impacts of digitalisation and create sustainable digitalisation: Dealing with data, education, climate and resource protection, employee involvement and inclusion.

Dr Christiane Rohleder, State Secretary at the BMUV, explains:

"Digital products and data-based services determine consumers' everyday lives - from communication in social networks to mobile payment and online shopping. This digital transformation challenges politics and business to make it consumer-friendly. This is where the Initiative for Corporate Digital Responsibility comes in, whose members want to actively shape the digital world for the benefit of consumers and the common good. Beyond digital consumer law, voluntary corporate engagement helps to strengthen consumer confidence in the digital world. At the Federal Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection, we want to further expand the CDR Initiative together with companies, civil society and academia. The interface between environmental and consumer protection also offers the opportunity to intensify the activities of the initiative for a sustainable digital society."

On 5 July 2022, the members of the CDR Initiative will present their reports for the first time at a CDR conference. The reports are intended to substantiate the CDR commitment of companies and create more transparency and trust in the digital age.
