Survey on the assessment of opportunities and risks in the use of AI in the population
On the occasion of the 5th CDR Conference on 14 November 2024 in Berlin, the CDR Initiative is publishing survey results on the opportunities and risks associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The aim of the survey is to examine citizens' experiences with AI technologies, the opportunities and risks associated with the use of AI and expectations regarding the responsible use of AI.
In October 2024, the CDR Initiative conducted a representative online survey with N=1,022 participants on the fairness of AI applications. Specifically, the survey focussed on citizens' experiences with AI technologies such as OpenAI Chat-GPT, Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, and with disinformation, chatbots and AI influencers. Additionally, it examined the opportunities and risks associated with AI applications. Lastly, the survey assessed citizens’ expectations for the responsible use of AI, including overarching expectations as well as specific expectations for businesses and policymakers.
The results show that AI is already having a significant impact on citizens' everyday lives and is being utilised in various forms. The opportunities offered by AI - such as increased convenience through automation, personalised recommendations and data-based decision support - are viewed positively by most respondents. At the same time, a clear majority of consumers see risks in the use of AI, particularly with regard to surveillance and data misuse, the reinforcement of prejudices and discrimination and the generation of misinformation.
The survey results also highlight that consumers have high expectations for the responsible use of AI. These include clear accountability and transparent decision-making, fair and non-discriminatory outcomes, reducing misinformation, monitoring AI applications, the possibility of human oversight, and strict data protection requirements. Both companies and policymakers face the task of implementing measures and establishing frameworks that meet these expectations and ensure the safe, ethical use of AI. From the citizens’ perspective, this also includes simple complaint mechanisms and liability rules.
